  • This church has been with me since birth, and I still love it to this day almost 18 years later

  • Grew up in this church before moving to Washington. They also held my grandfather's memorial service. This building holds a very special place in my heart.

  • The Unitarian Church on Atherton played a role in my career as writer and publisher. In 1969 at high school (Jordan HS Long Beach) my writing had been censored by the official school newspaper. It was a satire of why there was a dress code preventing dudes from growing long hair and girls were prohibited from wearing mini-skirts. These were the days before personal printers and prior to wide distribution of copy machines when mimeograph machines ruled for inexpensive print jobs - like church programs. I was attending Cal Heights Methodist and for $5 they let me print 500 copies containing articles, stories and cartoons I wrote and drew. I stapled the two pages together and handed them out across the street from the school. Obviously there was trouble but that never stopped me since readership and popularity soared. For the second issue I sold ads that brought in a total of $20 so earned a profit. By the third issue the Methodist minister expressed problems with the content confronting the establishment so I took the print project to the Unitarian Church where they kindly printed issues three and four without passing any judgement.
