Morningland is a modern-day cult aka high demand control group. Just like in any cult, one can learn some beneficial things, but there are also hidden dangers that become more obvious the longer you stay there. Nothing is more important than knowing what to look for when seeking community, and to be psychologically safe!

I would like to share a very helpful and brief reflection on what is a an unhealthy, and what is a healthy group, by Ronald M. Enroth, Ph.D:

“What are the hallmarks of unhealthy, aberrant churches?
The key indicator is control-oriented leadership, ministers who have a need to ‘lord it over the flock’. Abusive leaders demand submission and unquestioning loyalty. The person who raises uncomfortable questions or does not get with the program’ is cast aside. Guilt, fear, and intimidation are used to manipulate and control vulnerable members, especially those who have been taught to believe that questioning their pastor is comparable to questioning God.”

“How can we recognize a healthy church?
In addition to matters of appropriate doctrine, a healthy church is reconciling and restorative, not adversarial and elitist. Members of healthy churches seek to deepen and strengthen their family commitments. Legitimate leaders will welcome dissent and hard questions from members without threat of reprisal. Trustworthy leaders will encourage accountability, and they will establish checks and balances.”

Morningland’s structure and mode of functioning is predominantly unhealthy. I cannot urge anyone enough to research about mind control, manipulation and cults, before entering a new group.

I met someone who was completley enthralled with this place, and encouraged me to come along. At the time I was very open to the experience, as I was experimenting with many different spiritual paths (Zen, Course in Miracles, sweat lodges), and thought, Why not? even though she had refused to give me any information about it ahead of time.
That evening, all of my questions about the place and what their teachings were about, were left unanswered. Everything that was presented was extremely vague. I was looked upon in disbelief, like "Why aren't you getting this?" and felt this was an actual tactic designed to shame me into dropping my line of inquiry . Even a simple question to a staff member - "how long have you been here?" was met with an evasive response - "oh, it feels like forever." Funny, casual...but to me, it was another sign that no truths were being revealed here.
I could see how easy it would be for some people to get sucked in here, as the whole attitude of the place was that something mysterious and wonderful was going on. But as the mystery involved a secrecy that felt disturbing to me I quickly walked away...and felt an incredible relief.

  • Awesome pace to be. Transforming my life and my relationship with my higher power and others for the good. I love everything about it. Meditation is so enlightening. The selfless service of feeding so many people in the Long Beach Community. It's amazing to see. Totally recommend coming to a Dharma Talk or any of the classes. It's worth experiencing way more than once.

  • I love Morningland. It was there when I needed an open minded spiritual community! I get tired of the negative crap I hear people say about it! Most of these people have never even gone. I spent three years there and loved my experience. The people there were loving and caring and answered all my questions and I feel I grew a lot. I have since moved on to be a practitioner with Science of Mind but every now and then I like to return and hear a Dharma talk they are so inspiring!! Please give this place a chance if you are searching and tired of religious dogma. This may be the place for you!

  • People need to call the heck down about this place. It's not a cult, people aren't passing the cool aid. My next door neighbor was like a devil worshiper and when I was next to her I could feel the fact that this person was not right or that something was off. I felt this before i even knew what she was. I do not get the same feel from this place. It's not a church but a place or the spiritual path. If you don't like the place then don't go again. They don't pressure you to come back again and the actually want you to find a place of worship if not with them.to finish encourage you
